Reading at home
Your should read at home each night. Students will keep a reading log in their reading folder that needs to be signed by a parent or guardian after reading each night. Every time your child fills their Student Reading Log, they will receive a fabulous prize!
What is the importance of reading? If a child reads for 30 minutes each night they will get 15 hours of extra reading practice each month. That is an additional 135 hours of reading outside of school. It makes a huge difference!!! Reading fluency develops as a result of many opportunities to practice with a high degree of success.
Students may read a book that is sent home with them, a library book, or another book in the home. Listen to them read the first page. If they make more than 5 errors on the page, the book is too hard and should be replaced with a less-challenging book.
You are important to supporting your child's love of reading. Discussing books and sharing books with others are just two ways to model what good readers do. Enjoy this special time together!
Don’t stop taking time to read aloud now that your children have learned to read for themselves. This shared enjoyment will strengthen your child’s vocabulary, comprehension, interest and appreciation.
